This is an academic blog for my AP english IV class. This blog will refer to the novel, Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley and how I respond to it with academic value. :)

In Margaret Atwood's "Handmaid's Tale", the author creates a melancholic plot structure to emphasize the tragic uprising of a powerful and dominant society, of men known as the Republic of Gilead. The author creates a character named Offred, whom is currently a handmaid but once had a loving husband, and an irreplaceable daughter. Since Offred and the other handmaids are strictly supervised and restricted from many daily and normal activities, she cannot independently do anything as she pleases. As foggy memories of her past life appear in her mind, she acquires a desire to rebel and seek for the truth on the day her family was separated. By admitting that she is "happy" with her life, she is rebelling sharing false information to give society a sense of power, when she truly knows that they don’t have complete control over women and their intelligent minds. As much as Offred wants to live freely and make small gestures of rebellion, she is strictly watched and supervised by young men who are trained to fight and kill as soldiers. When the handmaids are released for their scheduled activity, “shopping”, the soldiers target them like vultures targeting their prey, watching their every move. This has Offred and the other handmaids dominated, making their every move a risk to getting punished. But with “Serena Joy”, the commander’s wife, persuading and tempting her to do wrong by having sexual intercourse with another man other than her husband, many complications of her rebellion and self respect come in to play. Convinced enough that she is doing the right thing for woman, she feels obligated to do as Serena Joy says.
